Welcome to Ambushed Curl Academy! I'm Your Educator, Amy Bush.
I've been a hair stylist for over 30 years and have been focusing solely on curls for almost half my career. I've studied across the globe and along the way developed my own approach to natural curls. In 2010, I opened Ambushed Salon, an exclusively curly hair salon, and have personally trained every stylist I've ever had on my team, taking them through my extensive Curl Immersion Internship to pass down my philosophies of what I call the 4 Pillars of ArchiTEXTURE.
Now I'm taking that education global with my online course, the 6 Weeks of Curl Classics so you can learn it, too. I believe that having a systematic approach and an understanding of a variety of techniques allows us to adapt to each client's needs.
By understanding the psychology of our curly haired client's and their curls, we can not only better serve everyone in our chair but grow our business at the same time.
"Working with Amy has been amazing! She's taught me so much about hair cutting techniques and always educates on the science part of hair. Amy has made me confident as a Curl Specialist and has cheered me on every step of the way." -Ester M.

If you're wondering... But why do I need to learn about all 4 Pillars? I only want to learn how to CUT curly hair!
I believe it is essential to understand all four parts to be able to truly deliver the amazing results your clients have been searching for. So many people out there have always hated their curls and really struggled to find a stylist that understood their struggles or knew how to really help them love their curls. They can be very skeptical. Cutting is just one piece of the pie. What’s a good cut if you can’t recommend the right products or teach them a solid home care routine? Digging into the psychology of their experiences and learning to anticipate their concerns will make you look like a mind reader and validate your credibility as a Curl Specialist.
"I have been searching for a curly hair program for a while now so when I saw this pop up on a Facebook group, there was no questioning it. This was my first curly hair class experience and it did not disappoint. I felt that it was extremely detailed in the information given and I appreciated that it was a very broad course. Touching on every single curl type from 2abc-4abc and everything in between. I have so much more confidence with my curly hair clientele than ever before thanks to Amy and her expertise. I would highly recommend this course to anyone wanting to learn more about curls." -Allyson P.
Redefining Common Curl Myths
Learn the specifics of these myths and more during the course!
MYTH: You should never use shampoo on curly hair.
TRUTH: It's important to cleanse curly hair on a regular weekly schedule. There are many great options to maintain properly hydrated curls.
MYTH: Never brush curly hair.
TRUTH: There is a time and a place for brushing curls. It can actually be a great tool for detangling and helping to distribute product evenly.
MYTH: All curly hair needs high amounts of moisture.
TRUTH: Porosity is a top determining factor for what the hair needs. Hair will either need moisture, hydration, protein or a combination of these.
Why should you learn from me? Because I've been there.
By going through the thought process and struggle of figuring out how to work with curls on my own, it provided me with a much deeper understanding of what every little technique did and how to use it to my advantage. Breaking it down to such a basic level allowed me to understand the “rules” and how to manipulate them. Eventually I was able to bring this all together into my 4 Pillars of ArchiTEXTURE system which I can’t wait to share with you. It’s high time all stylists were equipped with the education and confidence to handle any texture in their chair and I’m on a mission to reach as many stylists around the world as possible through online education.

“I am so grateful to have been able to take Amy's class! Everywhere I go I notice all the different hair types and identify them in the language I was taught during this course. I can think in my head of how I would cut and style that particular type of hair. I loved meeting on Zoom. It held me accountable and kept me on task with the course. The ladies that joined with me were from different places but I feel like we all had a common goal and became a great group of friends. Most importantly, it gave me confidence to do a curly haired client justice instead of winging it!” -Shayne U.
As we are always continuing to refine this course, we are counting on your feedback to make it the best it can be. During the course, we will be asking for your detailed feedback on your experience. We want to hear about what's missing, what's working, if you like the format, how it stacks up against other courses you've taken and anything else you can think of. Updates will be added as needed based on what we learn from our students. This is your opportunity to make a direct impact by adding your voice in redefining how curl education is taught.
